Exploring Coober Pedy
Now this is an outback town. It's super hot, even in the shade and super dry. We stayed underground the first night and now back to the swags in a caravan park, on a patch of dirt, and not a very big one at that. Boys are enjoying the Games Room AKA the Tv and the pool that is completely enclosed.
We enjoyed a self guided tour of the Old Timers Mine . Learning lots about mining and underground living. Boys were great mine detectives finding opal sheets and had fun noodling!
Next stop the Big Winch and lookout of Coober Pedy. The original one was lost due to a storm in 80's.
In a beautiful gallery we watched an Aboriginal painter quickly making a sunset masterpiece. A couple here in Coober Pedy run a kangaroo orphanage , helping Joey's that are brought in after mishaps to their mums. They care for them round the clock caring for them just like a newborn. We were able to meet and feed some adult kangaroos and a little one, about 6 months old.
Setting up camp we met with some of our group, before pizza and drive in ! What a way to introduce the boys to drive in. This Drive In was constructed in 1965 and built by the locals. It continues to run each Saturday night and is funded by locals (& tourists ) entries and fundraising. The movie was Jumanji which we all enjoyed except Xavier who watched Octonauts in the car.
We are using today to get last minute supplies, catch up on washing and repack the car! Heading out tonight as a group for dinner before we GO INTO THE DESERT!!!! Probably the last post for a while as we'll be out of range.
So good! Love following your journey. I'm going to miss your updates while you're going Outback!
