Week 1 part 1. Tasmania 30th Dec 2018 - 2nd January 2019

Day 1 Melbourne to Devonport
An early start to the day, we boarded the Spirit of Tasmania. A huge ship, the first 'cruise ' for the Aussie Elksplorers! A bit rough in parts but we managed to learn to walk in a zig zag to get anywhere! We even went to the Cinema, seeing the Grinch. We arrived in Tassie! Number 6 State and Territory for us in 2018! A beautiful sunset, throwing rocks into the ocean and watching SOT sail out.

Day 2 Devonport to Low Head via Beaconsfield.

Travelled about 45 min to Beaconsfield where we visited the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre. Well worth the visit! Josh particularly very interested in the rescue of Todd and Brant. We panned for gold and walked the many steps up the head shaft of the mine, which was closed in 2013 due to non profitability. It was also a very hands on museum with the boys sitting on tractors, moving apples along a conveyer belt and using ink quill to practice their cursive writing .

Onto the Platypus House, a guided tour learning about the Platypus and Echnidna. Watching platypus feed, diving in and out of the water to catch the worms and the echnidnas walking around us.. a little too close for some of us Elksplorers!!

The Seahorse World was well done, another guided tour, even seeing the nursery where they order them in age, and therefore, size. The babies were only 1cm long by 2mm wide. We got to hold a Seahorse between our fingers and also saw a few endangered species of marine life in the aquarium.

Moving onto Low Head, we ventured out to explore the pilot station with building dating back to early settlers. An amazing sunset over the ocean, last one for 2018.
Low Head Penquin tour was a great experience. In small groups with a knowledgeable young tour guide we sat on the beach waiting for the little penguins to come in for the night. Slow to come in but a great experience watching the adults coming back to their babies in the burrows up in the shrubs. We got so close , amazing, the photos don't do it justice!

Day 3 Low Head to Freycinet NP.
After a little sleep in we left Low Head hoping to score a free camp spot in Freycinet NP. The drive a 2.5 hour journey through farm land, tall timber tree lined streets with picturesque mountain range coming closer. A quick explore in Launceston, some beautiful old buildings but a very sleepy town on New Year's Day!
Unsucessful but blown away by Friendly Beaches ,camp sites all full, but we will be back to explore. Success in grabbing the last camp in a 4wd access free camp in whitewater wall, near Bluestone Bay. We set up then went to check out the Bay. Absolutely beautiful, with large rocks surrounded by Mountain Range. The water was cold, had a dead bird and blue bottles. Not meant to swim here obviously!
Back at camp surrounded by bush boys played cricket and hung out on top of brads car while we were visited by a wallaby.

Day 4 Freycinet NP
What an incredible place! The water is so clear, the range of blues in the water determined by the depth. Some rocky beaches and bays but the ones with sand are so so white. With the sun out its postcard perfect!
Starting our day by the 1.5 hour walk to Wineglass bay lookout, a steep climb with a view completely worth the effort! Gorgeous

.
A swim at Honeymoon Bay, picture perfect blue water, a beautiful outlook with very cold calm water. The boys enjoyed the swim but with the temperature of the water they didn't last too long! Next time we will bring wetsuits.

Boys enjoyed another swim at Coles Bay, shallow water with some small waves they really could have stayed for hours!
Last beach for the day, Friendly Beaches, an ocean beach with waves and the whitest, finest sand I've ever seen. Friendly Beaches has a great looking campsite but was full, a popular spot.

After dinner we explored the cliff edge near where we camped. The campsite known for its climbing, you can see why. Magnificent!
